Pape Matar Sarr Dominates First Start for Juventus

Pape Matar Sarr did not just start his first game for Juventus. He owned it.

He was always involved with the team and close to the ball. I'm happy with his performance.”

Just a few days earlier in Reggio Emilia, Spalletti had only given Sarr a taste of Serie A, sending him on from the bench against Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium. That was the teaser. This was the full showing.

On his full debut, the Senegal international stitched Juventus’ play together with the calm of a veteran. According to Sofascore, Sarr completed 98% of his passes and was flawless in the opposition half, hitting 100% accuracy there. He recorded 70 touches, constantly offering himself as an outlet, and battled in eight ground duels, winning three.

The numbers told one story. The touchline told another. Spalletti watched intently, as he had on September 13 in Reggio nell’Emilia before the Sassuolo match, and saw a midfielder who not only ran but understood when and where to run, staying close to the ball and the heart of the game.

The Italian press were more restrained than the coach, but still acknowledged a solid first start. Gazzetta dello Sport handed Sarr a 6.5 out of 10, while Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport both settled on a 6. Not spectacular, but quietly encouraging in a team that hit five and never looked troubled.

For Juventus, this is not just about one good night in Europe. Sarr only arrived on deadline day from Tottenham, joining on an initial loan worth €2.5 million, with an option to buy set at €27.5 million at the end of the season. Performances like this sharpen that option into a very real decision.
