Oxford United Withdraws Controversial ‘United 93’ Clothing Line

Oxford United have scrapped a new clothing range after a branding blunder linked the club to one of the darkest days in modern history.

The ‘Campus Clothing’ collection, launched to tap into the club’s heritage, carried “United 93” across the back of several items – a nod, in the designers’ minds, to Oxford United’s founding year of 1893.

On paper, it was simple nostalgia. In reality, it collided head‑on with a name loaded with global trauma.

“United 93” is the call sign of United Airlines Flight 93, the fourth hijacked plane in the 9/11 attacks on the United States. The aircraft crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on September 11, 2001, after passengers and crew fought back against Al Qaeda hijackers believed to be targeting the US Capitol in Washington D.C. All 44 people on board were killed.

That story, retold in the acclaimed 2006 docudrama ‘United 93’, turned the flight into a symbol of both resistance and profound loss. The designation is etched into public memory, especially given the wider horror of 9/11: four commercial planes seized by 19 Al Qaeda members, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center destroyed, and the Pentagon struck near Washington DC.

Against that backdrop, seeing “United 93” repurposed as lifestyle branding for a football club was never going to pass quietly. The reaction was swift, and the club has now pulled the entire range from its retail outlets and online store.

Oxford United accept the error has serious consequences. Stock is being written off, with the club prepared to take a financial hit rather than risk further offence or prolong the controversy. Protecting the club’s reputation has been placed firmly above any commercial return.

The fallout has triggered an internal reset. Oxford are now moving towards a full overhaul of their merchandise approval process, with more stringent checks expected before any future range reaches the shelves.

The episode is a sharp reminder to clubs across the EFL and beyond: those neat combinations of “United” and founding years on casual wear can carry meanings far beyond the turnstiles.
