Andre Onana's Loan to Trabzonspor and Premier League Buzz

Andre Onana has sealed a second straight season-long loan move to Trabzonspor, but his name is still being thrown around in Premier League conversations.

The Cameroon international has rejoined the Turkish Super Lig side for the 2026-27 campaign, again without an option to buy, and remains under contract at Manchester United until June 2028. On paper, his future is tied to Old Trafford. In reality, some believe his skill set belongs back in England.

Speaking to Premier Bet, Quinton Fortune underlined just how highly he rates Onana’s distribution and why it keeps him on the radar of top English clubs, despite his current Turkish detour.

"André Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League," Fortune said, pointing straight at the modern demand for ball-playing goalkeepers. Managers want to build from the back; Onana gives them that platform.

You can see why. His passing range is not just tidy, it’s expansive. Fortune highlighted the way Onana can "ping a ball 50, 60 yards" into a striker or midfielder, slicing through pressure and breaking lines with one swing of his boot. For teams obsessed with control and quick transitions, that kind of weapon changes the picture.

That quality hasn’t vanished, but confidence has taken a hit. Fortune didn’t dodge the reality of life in goal: when a goalkeeper gets it wrong, the mistake is replayed everywhere. "He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it," he said, adding that at his best Onana is "outstanding" for any side that insists on playing out from the back.

The message was clear: get his belief back, and the conversation about Onana shifts from recovery to opportunity.

Chelsea’s new leaders: Welbeck and Henderson

Fortune didn’t stop at the goalkeeper debate. He also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer business, particularly the arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson under Xabi Alonso.

There was a hint of regret from the former South Africa international. He admitted he would have loved to see Welbeck return to Manchester United instead of heading to Stamford Bridge. The striker’s work rate, versatility and experience still resonate with those who saw him come through at Old Trafford.

From Chelsea’s point of view, though, Fortune believes Alonso has read the room correctly. "Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United," he told Premier Bet, before zeroing in on the thinking behind the moves.

By bringing in Welbeck and Henderson, Alonso has deliberately added strong voices and seasoned heads to a young, inconsistent dressing room. These are players who understand the demands of the top level, who train properly, who set standards without needing an audience.

"He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck," Fortune said. In his view, they are "not only top, top players but great professionals too."
