Barcelona's Nou Camp Chosen for 2029 Champions League Final

The 2029 UEFA Champions League final will take place at Barcelona's renovated Nou Camp, ending a 30-year wait since the stadium last hosted the event. Despite strong bids from both Wembley Stadium in London and Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, UEFA's Executive Committee awarded the final to the Spanish venue.

Wembley and Dortmund Fall Short

Wembley Stadium has welcomed three Champions League finals since its reopening in 2007, including the most recent in 2024. The iconic London stadium had hoped to secure the 2029 final as well but was ultimately overlooked. Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion also missed out; it would have been the first time hosting the final there.

Nou Camp’s Renovation and History

The Nou Camp is undergoing significant renovations, which UEFA recognized when selecting it for the 2029 final. This decision recalls the memorable 1999 final held at the same ground, where Manchester United scored two late goals to beat Bayern Munich and complete a treble. The stadium also hosted the European Cup final in 1989, won by AC Milan.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said: "This is an immense source of pride for FC Barcelona and for all Barça supporters. This decision is also international recognition for the new Spotify Camp Nou, which is establishing itself as a world-class stadium at the forefront of fan experience, technology, connectivity, accessibility, and services."

Wembley’s Role in European Football

Beyond the Champions League finals, Wembley has been central to major European soccer events over the past twenty years. It hosted the final and semi-finals of Euro 2020, delayed due to the pandemic, and will be one of the key venues for Euro 2028 across the United Kingdom.

Other Upcoming Finals

The UEFA Executive Committee also awarded the 2028 Champions League final to the Allianz Arena in Munich. Bayern Munich's stadium hosted the final just last year, where Paris Saint-Germain convincingly defeated Inter Milan. This will mark the third time the Allianz Arena has hosted the final in 16 years.

Since Wembley's redevelopment, only Wembley and the Allianz Arena have each held three Champions League finals.

This season’s final is set for Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium, hosting its second final after Liverpool’s 2019 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
