North London Transfer Rumblings: Kone, Tonali, and More

North London’s transfer fault line is beginning to rumble.

Arsenal are understood to have agreed personal terms with France midfielder Manu Kone, positioning themselves at the front of the queue for a summer move to the Emirates. The 25-year-old, currently at Roma, has emerged as a prime target as Mikel Arteta looks to add power and depth to his midfield options.

Roma’s situation is driving the story. Despite clinching Champions League qualification, the Italian club must raise funds to stay on the right side of financial regulations, and Kone is among the players who could be sacrificed. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma have set a €50m (£43.2m) price tag, a figure that reflects both his importance and their need to sell.

Across the divide, Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a statement of their own.

Spurs are described as “increasingly confident” of signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, even with a £100m valuation attached to the Italian midfielder. It would be a seismic deal for the club, smashing their transfer record and signalling a new, more aggressive era in the market.

The Telegraph report that Roberto De Zerbi views Tonali as a cornerstone signing, a player around whom he can build his Tottenham midfield. For a club often accused of hesitating at the decisive moment in windows, the intent here is clear: if Newcastle are willing to talk, Spurs are ready to pay.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are keeping their powder a little drier but their gaze just as sharp.

The London club continue to monitor Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as a potential long-term solution between the posts. The Portugal international has been linked with a Premier League move for several windows and, after the World Cup, has been increasingly viewed as a player ready for a new challenge.

Portuguese outlet Record report that Porto would demand around €60m (£51.8m) for their captain. It is the sort of fee that narrows the field of suitors quickly, but Chelsea have not hidden their willingness to invest heavily in key positions under their current ownership.

Then there is Marcus Rashford, whose future once again sits on a knife-edge.

The England forward impressed during his loan spell at Barcelona last season, but the Spanish champions have turned down the chance to make the move permanent. They opted not to trigger a €30m purchase option, leaving Rashford’s situation back in Manchester United’s hands.

United have now set a new asking price of £40m, a figure that is open to almost everyone. Almost. ESPN report that only two clubs are excluded from accessing that discounted valuation: Manchester City and Liverpool. Any other side willing to meet the price can enter the conversation.

From midfield rebuilds in North London to goalkeeping succession plans at Stamford Bridge and a marquee forward potentially on the move again, the market is already crackling. The numbers are huge, the stakes even bigger. Who blinks first?
