Noah Okafor Ends Switzerland Career Under Coach Murat Yakin

Noah Okafor has drawn a hard line under his Switzerland career – at least for as long as Murat Yakin remains in charge.

The Leeds United forward announced on Thursday that he will no longer represent the national team under the current head coach, saying trust between the two has been “broken” and insisting the decision is not about minutes on the pitch.

Okafor, 26, took his message public on Instagram, laying bare his frustration with the current regime after a World Cup in which he played just 19 minutes. His only appearance came as a substitute in Switzerland’s last-32 win over Algeria.

“My decision has nothing to do with my playing time,” he wrote. “Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept.

“When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply.

“In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager.”

Those words mark a stark rupture between a player once seen as a long-term attacking option and the coach who has led Switzerland since August 2021.

A clean break – for now

Okafor informed the Swiss FA of his stance on Thursday. The federation responded with a brief, measured statement via a spokesperson to Reuters: “We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club.”

It leaves Switzerland without a forward who has collected 26 caps since his debut in 2019, and who is entering what should be the prime of his career.

For Okafor, the focus now shifts fully to club football. He joined Leeds from AC Milan in August 2025 for £18m, a move designed to give him a central role and consistent rhythm at domestic level.

Switzerland move on

Switzerland’s calendar does not pause. Yakin’s side next travel to North Macedonia on 26 September for their opening match of the 2026-27 Nations League, starting a new campaign with a clouded relationship to one of their better-known forwards.

Okafor has left the door firmly shut on an immediate return under Yakin. The question now is whether the national team can afford that fracture – or whether, one day, someone will have to blink.
