Newcastle United Set for Surprise Managerial Shift with German Matthias Jaissle Expected to Take Charge

Unexpected Manager Change at Newcastle United

Just weeks before the Premier League season kicks off, Newcastle United is reportedly facing a surprising change in management. Longtime head coach Eddie Howe is said to be stepping down immediately, according to English media sources. This decision comes only 22 days ahead of the new campaign.

Matthias Jaissle Poised to Replace Howe

The club seems to have already identified Matthias Jaissle, a 38-year-old German coach, as Howe's successor. Jaissle’s name has emerged in advanced talks with Newcastle. He first gained recognition coaching at RB Salzburg before moving to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia in 2023, where he remains contracted until 2027. The transition should be smooth since both Newcastle and Al-Ahli are owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Eddie Howe's Impact and Recent Developments

Since taking over in 2021, Eddie Howe led Newcastle to impressive heights, including qualification for the Champions League twice after two decades and securing the League Cup in 2025. Despite this success, his departure seems linked to dissatisfaction with recent transfer activities.

Transfer Market Concerns

Howe had been preparing the team normally, managing three friendlies recently, including a 4-1 win against Bristol City. Reports suggest his choice to leave solidified in the last 48 hours due to developments in player transfers. Newcastle has sold key players like Sandro Tonali (108 million euros to Tottenham Hotspur) and Anthony Gordon (to FC Barcelona). Captain Bruno Guimaraes might also depart, while the future of German international Nick Woltemade remains uncertain after a challenging debut season following his 75 million euro move from VfB Stuttgart.
