Gray arrived at Tottenham from Leeds United for £40 million (€46 million) and has already racked up 81 appearances in all competitions. He has filled in across central midfield, center back and right back, though his natural home remains in the middle of the park. For a Newcastle squad facing turnover and a demanding schedule, that flexibility carries obvious appeal.

Price tag versus need

Versatility, though, comes at a price.

Gray’s market value is estimated at around €35 million, but the Daily Mail reports that Tottenham would want more than £60 million (€69 million) to even consider a sale. Spurs see him as part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans, not a fringe asset to cash in on.

That stance is striking given Tottenham’s summer outlay. The club have already spent around €267 million on new arrivals and still need to balance the books. They will listen to offers for certain players. Gray, the report stresses, is not one of those they are actively looking to move on.

His standing at the club has only grown in recent months. He captained Spurs during preseason and wore the armband again in their Premier League opener against Brentford. Those are not the responsibilities of a player being gently eased towards the exit.

Yet even with the captaincy, Gray has not fully nailed down a permanent role in his preferred midfield position. He remains a key part of the squad, but not an untouchable starter in the middle. That nuance will not be lost on Newcastle as they weigh whether to test Tottenham’s resolve.

How hard should Newcastle push?

For now, Nico Gonzalez is understood to be Newcastle’s priority in midfield. His arrival would ease the immediate pressure on Jaissle and give the club room to breathe before making any big, late-window swings.

That changes the calculation on Gray. Newcastle do not have to rush. They do not have to pay over the odds simply to say they have landed another big name before the deadline.
