Morgan Gibbs-White Set for England Recall

Midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is poised to join the England squad, stepping in for Cole Palmer, who is withdrawing due to a minor injury. Gibbs-White, now playing for Nottingham Forest, was not part of the original squad for the upcoming Nations League matches but is expected to be called up shortly.

Coach Thomas Tuchel’s Comments

England manager Thomas Tuchel revealed that Gibbs-White had been close to selection and will now replace the Chelsea forward Palmer. At 26 years old, Gibbs-White brings experience, while Palmer, aged 24, was recently recalled by Tuchel after missing out on the World Cup squad, which raised some controversy.

Tuchel commented that Palmer had something to prove and needed to perform well to justify his place. Unfortunately, Palmer’s current injury means he will miss the extended international break during which England face four matches.

Palmer’s Situation

Palmer played the full match for Chelsea during their 3-0 loss at Brentford, but his recurring groin injury, which troubled him through the 2025-26 season, has forced him out of the England squad. This injury issue puzzled former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, now managing Manchester City.

Since missing the World Cup, Palmer has started six of Chelsea's seven games this season, completing five full matches and contributing four goals and two assists. His last appearance for England was in March during a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan.

Gibbs-White’s Recent Form

Gibbs-White last represented England in October 2025 in a 3-0 friendly victory over Wales. This season, he has scored one goal and provided two assists across five league games for Nottingham Forest.
