Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Potential Return for Chicago Fire Playoffs

Mbekezeli Mbokazi could yet have a say in Chicago Fire’s season, with the defender now on track for a possible return in time for the MLS Cup Playoffs in late November.

Back in July, when he tore a thigh muscle, the outlook was bleak. The expectation then was brutal and simple: season over. A breakout year, cut down in midsummer.

Gregg Berhalter no longer sees it that way.

Speaking after Fire’s 1-1 draw away to New York Red Bulls, the Chicago coach rowed back on his earlier assessment and opened the door to a late‑season comeback.

“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter admitted. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”

That single word – possibility – changes the picture for Chicago.

Before the injury, Mbokazi had been a rock at the back, one of the key reasons Fire looked so secure defensively. His form earned him a spot in the MLS All Star game and, with it, wider recognition across the league.

His rise wasn’t limited to club football either. At the World Cup with Bafana, he played a central role in a historic run, helping them finally break through the group stage barrier. On the biggest stage, he looked at home, one of the tournament’s standout young defenders.

Then came the tear in late July and the sense that both Fire and Bafana would have to do without him for the rest of the calendar year.

Now the script has shifted slightly. For Chicago, the timing of his rehab progress could be perfect, with the playoffs looming and the margins tightening. A fit Mbokazi, even returning late, would give Berhalter a high‑level option in a position where stability often decides knockout games.

For Bafana, the news lands differently.

They face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15, fixtures that fall just days before Mbokazi is expected to be ready for competitive action again. Even if his recovery stays on this encouraging track, that schedule makes his involvement for the national team highly unlikely.

Chicago, then, may be the first to benefit from his accelerated return. If the rehab continues to “progress,” as Berhalter put it, the Fire could welcome back one of their most influential players just as the stakes reach their peak.
