Marcus Rashford Returns to Old Trafford: A New Chapter Begins

Marcus Rashford’s name went up in lights again at Old Trafford, and this time the reaction was unmistakable.

As the fourth official lifted his board and the No.9 flashed up, a roar rolled around the stadium. After 20 long months away from the Manchester United shirt, Rashford was back on the pitch in a pre-season friendly against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan.

For a player many had already filed under “former United forward”, it felt like a plot twist.

From the exit door to another Old Trafford encore

Rashford’s last appearance for United came in December 2024. Since then, his story has been one of distance and doubt.

Cut from the squad by Amorim, he was first sent on loan to Aston Villa. The following summer, he was shipped out again, this time to Barcelona, with an option for the move to become permanent for £26m. The academy graduate, once the face of United’s future, suddenly looked like a man being quietly moved out of the picture.

When his No.10 shirt was handed to Matheus Cunha, the message seemed clear. United were moving on. So was Rashford. He even admitted openly that he hoped to turn his Barcelona loan into a permanent stay at the Nou Camp.

Barca walked away. United did not.

Rashford returned to Old Trafford with his future still uncertain and his old number gone. On Saturday, he stepped back into the fold wearing No.9, a temporary solution that may yet change again before the season starts. The symbolism was hard to miss: same player, different status, everything up for debate.

A divided fanbase, a warm welcome

Inside the ground, though, the reaction cut through the noise. As his number appeared, Old Trafford responded with applause and cheers. Whatever has been said, whatever has been written, the instinct from the stands in that moment was to back one of their own.

That does not mean the fanbase is united on what comes next.

A poll run by the Manchester Evening News earlier in the summer laid out the split starkly. Out of 7,924 voters, 69% (5,465 votes) felt it was time for the club to cut ties with Rashford. The remaining 31% (2,459 voters) wanted to see him handed another chance.

The tension between sentiment and strategy hangs over his return. The academy product who once carried United’s attack is now a test case in how ruthless this rebuild will be.

Carrick’s stance and an uncertain future

Inside the club, the line is clear enough. United are still open to selling Rashford if the right offer lands. His return to the pitch does not erase that reality.

Michael Carrick, though, has struck a different tone in public. The United manager has insisted he is happy to welcome Rashford back into the group and has stressed that the forward has been in good spirits since rejoining the squad.

So Rashford runs out again in United colours, applauded by supporters who are not sure they want him to stay, backed by a manager who might yet have to plan without him, and employed by a club that will listen to bids.

On Saturday, none of that complexity followed him over the white line. It was just a player, back on the grass, back at Old Trafford, with a new number on his back and an old question hanging in the air.
