Mancini Returns as Head Coach of Italy National Team
Roberto Mancini is back where his name carries the most weight: in charge of the Italian national team. The 61-year-old has been reappointed as head coach, with Claudio Ranieri stepping in alongside him as technical director in a strikingly experienced double act.
Mancini arrives from a winning post. His most recent job at Al-Sadd in Qatar ended with the Stars League title, another trophy on a résumé that already includes a Premier League crown with Manchester City and major honours across Europe. Now he returns to the international stage, tasked once more with shaping Italy’s identity and results.
Alongside him, Ranieri brings decades of tactical knowledge and dressing-room management to the technical director role. It is a partnership built on familiarity with pressure, scrutiny, and the demands of elite football.
This reshuffle follows a turbulent spell behind the scenes. An attempt to appoint Andrea Pirlo as coach was blocked, a move that triggered the resignations of Paolo Maldini and Leonardo from their positions. Their departure underlined the fault lines within the hierarchy and cleared the way for a new structure.
Out of that upheaval comes a distinctly old-school solution: Mancini on the touchline, Ranieri overseeing the broader technical vision. Two veterans, one national team, and a fresh chapter for Italy starting under very familiar faces.
