Manchester United Revives Interest in Nkunku After Amorim's Decision

Manchester United’s long-running interest in Christopher Nkunku has flickered back into life – thanks to a brutal call from Ruben Amorim at AC Milan.

Nkunku, once a headline £52million arrival at Chelsea in 2023, has reportedly been told he is not part of Amorim’s plans at San Siro. Sky Italia report that the French forward is among a group of players deemed surplus to requirements by Milan’s new head coach.

For United, this is familiar territory. And potentially unfinished business.

From Leipzig star to Chelsea misfit

Nkunku arrived in England with serious pedigree. At RB Leipzig he was devastating: 70 goals in 172 games, a constant threat between the lines, capable of playing across the front and in behind a striker.

The Premier League chapter never lived up to that billing.

Injuries and dips in form undermined his Chelsea spell. He made only 60 appearances for the Blues, scoring 18 goals, and eventually slipped behind Nicolas Jackson in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. Once that happened, the exit door began to open.

United were linked at that stage, but chose not to move. Instead, Nkunku headed to Serie A, joining AC Milan on a five-year deal worth £35m. His first season in Italy brought 35 appearances and eight goals – solid, not spectacular.

Now even that platform looks to have vanished.

Amorim’s Milan cull opens a door

Amorim, 41, took the Milan job in June after leaving Manchester United in January. His early weeks have been ruthless. Following an underwhelming pre-season tour – including a bruising 3-0 defeat to Chelsea – he is preparing a major clear-out.

Nkunku is one of several high-profile names reportedly on the chopping block, alongside Fikayo Tomori, Pervis Estupinan, Santiago Gimenez, Youssouf Fofana, David Odogu and Filippo Terracciano.

For the Frenchman, it’s a sharp verdict. For United, it might be the opening they once lacked.

A four-year mission that never quite started

United’s interest in Nkunku goes back to his Leipzig days. Ralf Rangnick, then in charge at Old Trafford, flagged him as a serious option four years ago. The problem was embarrassingly basic: the club had no scouting reports on him, so he never made it onto the official shortlist.

The idea resurfaced during the 2025 winter window. Nkunku was again linked with United, this time as part of a potential swap arrangement amid Chelsea’s interest in Alejandro Garnacho. Talks never progressed. United backed away, unwilling to commit to what they saw as a short-term fix.

Now, with Amorim effectively putting Nkunku in the shop window, the scenario has changed again. This time, United know exactly who they would be getting.
