Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Fernandes Among Three Targets
Manchester United’s summer plan is taking shape, and it starts in the middle of the pitch.
In the wake of West Ham’s relegation, United are preparing to make their interest in 21-year-old midfielder Fernandes official, with the club viewing him as one of three midfield signings for the upcoming window. The Old Trafford hierarchy believe the Portuguese talent will be available and are moving to understand the financial framework of a deal.
United value Fernandes at around £50 million. That figure is seen internally as a fair starting point, but the club want clarity on whether that number can realistically get a transfer over the line, or if they will be drawn into a market they are determined not to inflate.
West Ham, though, are not expected to make it easy. Those close to the London club anticipate an attempt to draw multiple suitors into the race and ignite a bidding war that drives the fee north. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have already been credibly linked, and West Ham are likely to welcome that interest as they look to maximise their return on one of their key assets.
Ederson deal sets the tone
United’s intent around Fernandes comes as they edge towards what they hope will be one of the smartest deals of their summer: Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta.
Talks have progressed to the point where an early agreement is now viewed as increasingly likely. A fee below £35 million has been considered possible, and United see that as the benchmark of value they want to hit repeatedly in this window — strong profiles at sensible prices, rather than headline-chasing fees.
That approach could have consequences elsewhere. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba remains highly admired inside Old Trafford, but not at the current £100 million valuation. Unless Brighton soften their stance, United are prepared to walk away rather than shatter their budget for a single player.
As things stand, there has been no real indication that Brighton are ready to compromise. With the summer window fast approaching, United may pivot towards more attainable options rather than wait for a price drop that never comes.
Shortlist grows, but price is king
The recruitment team at United have cast the net wide. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni are all on the list of players admired by decision-makers.
Each name carries its own complications. Availability, price, and club willingness to negotiate will dictate whether admiration turns into a formal move. United’s stance is clear: they want three midfielders, but they will not be bounced into overpaying, regardless of the profile on offer.
The shape of their midfield next season will depend on how firmly they stick to that principle when the pressure of the market hits.
Rashford’s future clouds left-sided plans
While United drive ahead with their midfield rebuild, plans on the left wing are stuck in neutral.
The club are considering delaying the recruitment of a left-sided attacker until Marcus Rashford’s future becomes clearer. His situation is unresolved, and the wider European picture is adding another layer of uncertainty.
Anthony Gordon’s pending move to Barcelona has left Rashford’s prospects in Spain hanging in the balance. There is still hope on the player’s side that a permanent switch to Barca could materialise, and the Catalan club retain an interest, but any move will hinge on whether the finances can be made to work.
For United, that means a waiting game. Commit now to a new left-sided attacker and they risk crowding out a position that might yet be vacated by one of their biggest names. Hold off, and they gamble on late-window turbulence.
Their midfield strategy looks decisive. Their stance on Rashford and the left flank, far less so. The next few weeks will reveal whether United can control this window on their terms, or whether the market — and Barcelona — end up dictating the final shape of their squad.
