Manchester United have been fighting to keep hold of JJ Gabriel, but the battle looks close to lost.

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed on August 13 that the club were worried about the 15-year-old’s future, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both circling. Those concerns have now hardened into reality.

Earlier this week, Gabriel formally notified United that he wants his registration cancelled immediately so he can become a free agent. That move has opened the door for Europe’s elite, and he has already held talks with both Barcelona and Real Madrid, with sources indicating those conversations have gone well.

The sting for United is the price.

According to The Daily Mail, if Gabriel ends up at either Barcelona or Madrid, United will receive around £300,000 in compensation. For a highly rated young attacker being chased by two of the biggest clubs in world football, it is a strikingly low figure.

Gabriel holds an Irish passport, which means he is free to move abroad when he turns 16 on October 6. The clock is ticking, and United look powerless to stop a player they have nurtured from walking away for what amounts to loose change in the modern market.

Wilcox backs Carrick as pressure rises inside Old Trafford

While the academy faces a potential blow, the first team is dealing with its own storm.

On September 17, Bailey reported that United’s hierarchy have opted to stick with Michael Carrick as manager. The INEOS-led ownership have no immediate plans to sack him, despite a flat start to the Premier League season – just four points from four games – and a League Cup defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford this week.

Inside the club, Jason Wilcox is emerging as Carrick’s key ally.

Well-known United fan, YouTuber and presenter Mark Goldbridge, who has more than 1.1 million followers on X, claimed that Wilcox is firmly backing Carrick, even if not everyone in the boardroom agrees. Posting at 9:03am on September 18, Goldbridge wrote:

“Someone on the board isn’t convinced by Carrick.

“It’s not Wilcox though.

“Wilcox is firmly with Carrick and believes United should stick with his decision for the long term.

“The BIG question is why Wilcox is still here?

“Everything he’s touched has been catastrophic and he had no CV for this job in the first place.

“How he’s still calling the shots is incredible.

“Wilcox, whose role is to be close to training, supporting Carrick on coaching and recruitment.

“Wilcox has already overseen the dismissals of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim since arriving at United in April 2024.”

It paints a picture of a club where the manager is being shielded from immediate danger by a director of football whose own position is under fierce scrutiny from sections of the fanbase.

Carrick, for now, has Wilcox in his corner. The question is how long that alignment holds if results do not turn.

Tuchel’s blunt message for Harry Maguire

Away from club politics, another United figure finds himself under the microscope on the international stage.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has delivered a clear, uncompromising message to Harry Maguire after leaving the defender out of his plans again.

Maguire was omitted from England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup finals in the summer and has once more been left out of the latest squad for the September and October international break. The former Leicester City centre-back did not hide his frustration over missing the World Cup, speaking publicly about his disappointment.

Tuchel has not forgotten.

Asked whether Maguire’s reaction to his initial omission now makes it harder to pick the United defender, Tuchel, quoted by The Mirror, replied:

“It doesn’t help. It does not help.

“I will not hold it against him for the rest of his life because I’m not that type of person.

“I can forget easily and quickly, but I didn’t like it and it doesn’t help.”
