Manchester City Sign Gerónimo Rulli in Budget Deal

Manchester City have moved to reinforce their goalkeeping department with the signing of Argentina international Gerónimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year contract.

The 34-year-old has signed a deal running until June 2028, with City paying around £1.7m for the experienced goalkeeper. He will wear the No 28 shirt at the Etihad and effectively steps in as James Trafford’s replacement after the England international’s switch to Leeds.

A familiar name returns, but this time with a very different profile.

Rulli technically spent the 2016/17 season on City’s books, yet never made a first-team appearance before moving on. Since then he has built a substantial career across Europe, taking in spells at Real Sociedad, Montpellier, Villarreal, Ajax and most recently Marseille.

Those years have hardened him into a seasoned operator.

On the international stage, Rulli has collected eight caps for Argentina and was part of the squads that lifted the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América, adding heavyweight honours to his CV even if he was not the headline act.

English fans will remember him most vividly from Gdańsk in 2021. That night, Rulli played a decisive role in Villarreal’s Europa League final triumph over Manchester United, scoring and then saving in the marathon penalty shootout to seal the trophy.

Now he returns to Manchester not as a prospect, but as a proven winner asked to add depth, experience and calm behind City’s established No 1.
