Manchester City Plan Loan for Hertha BSC Prodigy Eichhorn
Manchester City look set to win the race for Hertha BSC prodigy Eichhorn – but the Premier League champions are already preparing to send him straight back out the door.
The plan from the Etihad is clear: sign the 16-year-old, loan him immediately, and let him learn his trade with regular first-team minutes. Bayer 04 Leverkusen have emerged as a leading option for that next step, a move that would drop the teenager straight into the intensity of the Bundesliga without placing him under the glare of its two biggest spotlights.
Because this tug of war is far from over.
Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are still in the picture, still watching, still waiting. Both clubs remain hopeful of landing Eichhorn in the next transfer window, and neither is used to losing battles for Germany’s brightest young talents.
Dortmund, especially, have been repeatedly positioned as favourites. Reports in Bild describe the Black and Yellows as having “the best chance” of securing his signature, with a meeting between sporting director Ole Book and the player said to have significantly strengthened their hand. It fits Dortmund’s profile: a high-ceiling midfielder, still a teenager, already being discussed as a long-term project.
Yet the story has taken a twist.
Sport Bild claims Eichhorn is not fully sold on BVB’s current playing style under Niko Kovac and would actually prefer a move to Bayer Leverkusen or RB Leipzig. For a player whose development hinges on system and role, that detail matters. Leverkusen and Leipzig both offer high-tempo, clearly defined structures that have helped young players explode onto the European stage in recent years.
Bayern, usually the final word in any domestic transfer saga, are wrestling with their own doubts. According to kicker, there is internal disagreement at Säbener Straße over whether to move for the 21-year-old, even as his quality is widely admired within the club. The interest is real; the conviction, less so.
Back in Berlin, Hertha BSC are trying to hold their ground for one more year.
The club have not completely given up on keeping Eichhorn for another season. Bild reports that Hertha’s plan is to activate a €12 million release clause next summer, cash in on the midfielder, and then immediately bring him back on loan for an additional campaign. It is a compromise between sporting need and financial reality: secure a significant fee, but keep their midfield anchor in place a little longer.
So the picture is messy. Manchester City ready to buy and loan. Dortmund pushing their project. Leverkusen and Leipzig offering stylistic appeal. Bayern divided. Hertha clinging to the idea of one last season.
For a 16-year-old defensive midfielder, the decision will shape an entire career. The question now is simple: does he choose the quickest path to the top, or the clearest path to the pitch?
