Man Utd Set for Windfall as Kambwala Nears Villarreal Exit
Manchester United are in line for a minor cash boost with former defender Willy Kambwala expected to leave Villarreal before the transfer deadline.
Italian side Como are understood to be leading the race for the 19-year-old, edging ahead of La Liga outfit Osasuna in the battle for his signature. Any deal will trigger a sell-on clause inserted by United when Kambwala left Old Trafford two years ago.
At the time of his move to Villarreal in 2024, United sources described that sell-on as “sizeable”. The Spanish club agreed a package worth €5.5 million plus a possible €6m in add-ons to sign the centre-back, and United also secured a buy-back option and matching rights for three years, alongside the sell-on clause.
This time, though, Villarreal are not expected to command a major fee from Como, which will naturally limit the amount that flows back to Old Trafford.
Even so, the deal underlines a clear shift in United’s transfer strategy. What used to be an occasional safeguard has become standard policy since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment and Ineos’ takeover of football operations. The club now routinely hardwires future value into outgoing transfers.
Recent Deals
Recent deals show the pattern. Tyler Fredricson’s move to Lausanne-Sport came with what United considered a “high percentage” sell-on clause and a buy-back option. Radek Vitek’s switch to Middlesbrough included a buy-back clause, matching rights and a sell-on of up to 35 per cent.
Ethan Williams’ sale to Peterborough last week went even further: United inserted a 50 per cent sell-on clause, plus buy-back and matching rights again.
Kambwala’s next step, then, is more than just a young defender changing clubs. It is another small test of a new Old Trafford doctrine: never let a talent walk away without keeping a hand on the future profit.
