Liverpool's Summer Rebuild: Ramsay Loaned to St Mirren

Liverpool’s summer rebuild is still in motion, but one door at Anfield has effectively closed for good.

Work continues behind the scenes on two ambitious attacking moves. Liverpool remain in talks for Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh, though the numbers on the table are eye-watering.

Barcola is understood to be available at around £120m, with Paris Saint-Germain readying themselves for the 23-year-old’s possible departure. On the south coast, Brighton are growing increasingly confident they can squeeze top dollar for Minteh, whose valuation has climbed to £80m.

Whether Richard Hughes is prepared to engage at those levels is another matter entirely. There is a very real prospect Liverpool, fresh from their 2024/25 Premier League title, simply walk away if the asking prices don’t come down.

At the same time, outgoings must be tidied up. Stefan Bajcetic, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott are all expected to move on as the squad is reshaped.

Ramsay heads to St Mirren as Liverpool chapter fades

One deal is already done. Calvin Ramsay has completed a loan move to St Mirren in Scotland for the 2026/27 season.

For the 23-year-old right-back, it marks another attempt to kick-start a career that has stalled badly since his £4m switch from Aberdeen in 2022. His Liverpool story has largely been written away from Anfield, with loan spells at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock filling most of his time.

The Scotland international’s swift dismissal from Arne Slot’s plans did not sit well with every supporter, especially after Liverpool’s struggles at right-back last season. Many felt Ramsay never truly received a fair audition.

St Mirren see it very differently. They see opportunity. Manager Craig McLeish called Ramsay’s talent “exceptional” and made it clear the club intend to give him what Liverpool could not: a consistent run of games.

"It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group," he told BBC Sport.

A quiet goodbye to Anfield

This move all but confirms Ramsay’s Liverpool career is over. His contract at Anfield runs until 2027, and the club have effectively chosen to let him see it out on loan elsewhere rather than fight for a place in Slot’s squad.

Ramsay departs the Liverpool stage having made his breakthrough under Jurgen Klopp, but with only four senior appearances to show for it. The next chapter will be written in the Scottish Premiership, where every tackle, cross and sprint doubles as an audition for his next permanent home.
