The club are reportedly in the race for Finn Jeltsch, Stuttgart’s highly rated young centre-back, in what would be a €50m move. An eye-watering fee for a teenager, but that’s the going rate when half of Europe circles.

A defence built on uncertainty

Liverpool’s centre-back department looks crowded on paper and fragile in reality.

Virgil van Dijk is out of contract next summer. Joe Gomez is in the same position. Ronald Araujo’s loan only becomes permanent if Liverpool trigger a €50m option, a decision that will define the shape of the back line for years.

Strip those situations away and the long-term picture becomes stark. Only Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are guaranteed to be at the club beyond this season. Both are talented. Neither is proven.

Jacquet, 21, is the older of the two and is returning from shoulder surgery. Leoni, just 19, has spent roughly a year sidelined with a serious knee injury. They are prospects, not yet pillars. That’s the tension Liverpool’s hierarchy must resolve.

So the club will almost certainly need to dip back into the centre-back market in 2027. And it looks like they’ve already identified one of the marquee names.

Finn Jeltsch on the radar

According to TuttoJuve, Liverpool are among the clubs tracking Finn Jeltsch ahead of a possible move next year. The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart, thrusting himself into the spotlight across Europe.

The numbers underline why he is attracting that level of attention. Jeltsch was one of only 14 teenage centre-backs to log at least 1,000 minutes in Europe’s top five leagues last season. Raise that threshold to 1,500 minutes and the list shrinks to just 10 players. By one Value Adder model, Jeltsch ranks around fifth in that elite group.

Stuttgart know exactly what they have. They are not interested in a bargain sale. The asking price stands at €50m, and the queue is forming. Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are all said to be monitoring the situation.

This is not a quiet pursuit. It’s a full-scale battle for one of the most coveted young defenders on the market.

Does the profile fit Liverpool’s puzzle?

Here’s the catch. Liverpool already have two young centre-backs tied down long term. The only defenders definitely at the club beyond this season have an average age of 20.

Add another 20-year-old in 2027 and you don’t just get youthful energy. You get a back line built almost entirely on potential, with very little top-level experience to steady it.

That’s why there’s scepticism over whether Liverpool will actually pull the trigger, even if they admire Jeltsch and his ceiling. Investing €50m in a third young centre-back would be a bold bet on development curves and patience in a league that rarely offers either.

Then again, this might be exactly where Liverpool believe the value lies: getting ahead of the market, stockpiling elite talent before prices rise even higher.
