Leeds United Appeal for Second Goalscorer Identity

Leeds United have lodged an appeal over the identity of their second goalscorer in Monday night’s 4-1 win against Newcastle United, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin fights to reclaim a strike he was convinced was his.

The incident came in the 34th minute at Elland Road. James Justin whipped in a teasing cross from the right, Calvert-Lewin attacked it, and the ball flew in to put Leeds 2-0 up. The striker wheeled away believing he had nodded it home, only for the record to later show a different name.

Jayden Bogle was officially credited with the goal after it was ruled he had the final touch, a decision that left Calvert-Lewin stunned when the referee informed him post-match. The forward, who did get on the scoresheet in first-half stoppage time with Leeds’ third, looked visibly bemused as he learned the second had been taken off him and handed to his team-mate.

The Premier League match centre later confirmed on X that the “goal accreditation panel adjudged Leeds' 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal”, closing the book on the night but opening a fresh debate inside the Leeds camp.

That debate has now become formal. A second, independent panel will be convened as part of the appeals process to review the footage and decide who will ultimately be awarded the goal.

The scoreline will not change. The stats might – and for a striker chasing every goal he can get, that matters.
