Lee Clark resigned as Hartlepool United head coach with immediate effect after a bruising 3-1 home defeat by Worthing, a result that left Victoria Park restless and unforgiving.

The loss was Hartlepool’s third in a row and their sixth in seven National League games, a grim run that dropped them to 18th before the later kick-offs and cranked up the pressure to breaking point. By the time the final whistle went, the mood in the stands had turned, with sections of the support calling for Clark to go as the slump dragged on.

He did not wait long to act.

"I resign from my position with immediate effect," Clark told BBC Radio Tees, confirming his departure in stark, simple terms. A former Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham midfielder, he spoke with clear disappointment at how quickly his tenure had unravelled.

"I wanted to give this club and the fans something to be proud of, what they deserve, but I haven't been able to do that unfortunately."

Clark arrived in the summer, stepping into the Hartlepool job after a short spell with Rotherham United at the end of last season. His track record as a manager at Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City had offered a degree of optimism that he could steady a club still wrestling with life outside the English Football League.

Instead, the slide continued.

"I was excited to take the job and I wanted to be the man to get them back to where they need to be and deserve to be, but it hasn't worked out," he admitted, his words underlining the scale of the task he leaves behind.

The search begins immediately for a new permanent manager or head coach – the ninth since Hartlepool dropped out of the league. For a fanbase desperate for stability and a way back, the next appointment cannot simply be another name on an ever-lengthening list.
