Lamine Camara Focuses on Monaco After Chelsea Move Collapse

Lamine Camara insists he has “turned the page” on his collapsed move to Chelsea and is locking back in on Monaco’s Ligue 1 campaign.

The 22-year-old midfielder came within touching distance of a Premier League switch worth £47.1m, completing a medical before the deal fell apart in the frantic final hours of the transfer window.

Two earlier Chelsea bids had already been knocked back, but Monaco softened their stance late in the window as they juggled interest in several key players. The situation grew more tangled when Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton briefly looked in jeopardy, pushing Monaco towards selling Camara instead.

Then the pendulum swung again. As Balogun’s transfer appeared to be back on course, Monaco seemed to cool on the idea of losing Camara. By the time the window shut, the twist was complete: both players stayed put in the principality.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” Camara said, speaking before Monaco’s game against Strasbourg on Saturday. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season.”

Reports in France had suggested Monaco needed at least one major sale this summer and would rather cash in on Balogun than lose their Senegal international midfielder. Inside the club, the message had been consistent: it would take a “substantial fee” to prise Camara away.

On the pitch, Monaco have started the season like a team unbothered by the transfer noise. Three wins from three put them second behind Rennes heading into the weekend, with a game in hand and early momentum building.

“I can help the team a lot,” Camara said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

The move to Chelsea is gone. The audition for whatever comes next has already begun.
