Kylian Mbappé Ends Nike Era for Landmark Deal with On Holding
Kylian Mbappé has drawn a bold line under nearly 20 years with Nike, walking away from the American giant to sign a landmark deal with Swiss brand On Holding as it prepares a full-scale move into professional football.
The Real Madrid forward had worn the Swoosh since he was eight. He rose from academy prospect to global superstar as one of Nike’s headline names, sharing top billing with Cristiano Ronaldo and Vinícius Júnior and fronting the company’s flagship Mercurial boot line. For a long time, he wasn’t just a Nike athlete. He was one of its defining faces.
That era is over.
Mbappé’s contract with Nike expired on July 31, but the relationship lingered in the public eye. He still appeared in Nike campaigns, and the brand continued to push his image across its commercial platforms. The uncertainty around his next move grew with every advert, every social post that still carried his name.
Now the wait is finished. Mbappé has confirmed his partnership with On, a company that built its reputation on running technology and has spent the last few years quietly positioning itself for something bigger.
“From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow's game,” Mbappé said in the official announcement. “I want to bring my experience and perspective into what we create, push what's possible through innovation, and always stay true to the joy of football. We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”
For On, this is a statement of intent. The Swiss brand has already rewritten parts of the tennis landscape, bringing Roger Federer on board in November 2019 as an investor and strategic partner. The Swiss legend then helped drive product development and fronted his own signature line.
Mbappé is now following a path Federer knows well. The tennis icon also broke away from a long-standing Nike deal to align with On, eventually becoming a shareholder and creative force inside the company. The template is clear: not just endorsement, but influence.
Nike’s fingerprints are all over Mbappé’s rise. From his early days in academy football, through his explosion at Monaco, his superstar turn at Paris Saint-Germain and his arrival at Madrid, the brand backed him with tailored campaigns and exclusive boots carrying his name. That level of treatment is usually reserved for the very top tier, the bracket occupied by players like Ronaldo.
Ending that relationship after almost two decades doesn’t just close a contract. It closes a chapter in how modern footballers and brands grow together.
Now comes the next phase. With On plotting its first dedicated football collection, Mbappé is expected to sit at the heart of the design and development process, not just as a poster boy but as a driving voice. For a player who has already reshaped the transfer market and the forward’s role on the pitch, the question is simple: how much of the game’s future will he now shape off it as well?
