Kylian Mbappé Joins On Holding: A New Era in Football Boots

Kylian Mbappé has closed the book on nearly 20 years with Nike and opened a new chapter with Swiss brand On Holding, a move that could reshape football’s boot market as decisively as his runs reshape defences.

The Real Madrid forward, who first signed with Nike at just eight years old, has agreed a landmark partnership with On as the company steps fully into professional football. For almost two decades he sat at the heart of Nike’s global strategy, evolving into one of the faces of the Mercurial line alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Vinícius Jr. Now he’s walking away.

The break became official after his Nike contract expired on July 31. Even as the deal ticked towards its end, Mbappé kept appearing in Nike campaigns, while the American giant continued to push his image across its channels. The uncertainty lingered. The relationship, it seemed, might yet be salvaged.

It wasn’t.

On Wednesday, Mbappé confirmed the switch and framed it as more than a simple logo change.

“From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow's game,” he said in the official announcement. “I want to bring my experience and perspective into what we create, push what's possible through innovation, and always stay true to the joy of football. We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”

For On, this is a bold escalation. Built on running shoes and performance gear, the Swiss company has spent the past few years edging into new territory. In November 2019 it secured Roger Federer as an investor and strategic partner, a move that gave the brand instant credibility in tennis and a global figurehead.

Now it has football’s most marketable forward.

There is a clear blueprint here. Federer also walked away from a long-standing Nike deal to work with On, later becoming a shareholder and fronting his own signature line. Mbappé’s agreement follows that path: not just endorsement, but collaboration and influence over what comes next.

Nike’s role in his rise is undeniable. The brand backed him from his academy days through Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and on to Madrid, turning him into one of the pillars of its football portfolio. He received exclusive boots bearing his name, the kind of treatment reserved for the elite tier occupied by Ronaldo and a select few others.

Ending that relationship after almost two decades closes a defining era in football marketing. The Swoosh loses a generational star it helped build; On gains a global icon just as it prepares to launch its first serious assault on the football market.

The real intrigue now lies ahead: Mbappé is expected to play a direct role in designing and developing On’s upcoming football collection. For a player obsessed with shaping games, the chance to help shape the gear itself might be the most powerful move of all.
