Juventus Goalkeeping Battle: Vicario vs Grabara

Juventus’ goalkeeping hierarchy has been ripped up and rewritten in a single window. The club moved on from Michele Di Gregorio and long-serving deputy Mattia Perin, then handed the gloves to two loanees they believe can anchor the position for the season: Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham and Kamil Grabara from Wolfsburg.

A new battle in goal

Juventus had tracked both Vicario and Grabara for some time before finally striking in the latest transfer window. Inside the club, there is a firm belief they have landed two high-level goalkeepers capable of ending the uncertainty that had begun to creep into the role.

Vicario has the edge for now. The Tottenham loanee has started strongly and currently stands as Luciano Spalletti’s first choice. But there are no guarantees. Not under this coach.

Last season, Spalletti showed he is perfectly willing to rotate his goalkeepers and drop big names if standards slip. No position is ring-fenced, not even the one in front of the curva. That history sends a clear message to Vicario: any dip, any costly mistake, and Grabara is close enough to feel his breath on the back of his neck.

So far, Vicario has done what was asked of him. He has been solid between the posts, enough to suggest he can keep the job for a long stretch. Yet Grabara is not here to watch. The Polish keeper will keep pushing, training for the moment the door opens and he can step through as the starter.

Spalletti’s leverage

For Juventus, this is exactly the kind of tension they wanted. Two ambitious goalkeepers, one spot, no comfort zones.

The internal duel allows Spalletti to demand relentless standards. He can pick the goalkeeper he feels best suits a specific opponent or tactical plan, and both men know any complacency will be punished. It sharpens focus. It raises the level. It gives the coach leverage.

And it changes the mood around a position that had started to feel settled, almost static, in recent years. Now, every matchday selection in goal feels like a small storyline of its own.

Vicario on Grabara: “Healthy competition”

Amid that rivalry, Vicario has been careful to underline the respect between the two. Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, the Italian praised his new teammate and acknowledged the quality of the man trying to take his place.

“We all know each other more or less, I remember his great season in the Champions League with Copenhagen. He's a strong, quality goalkeeper. There's healthy competition between us, as it should be,” Vicario said.

No mind games. No barbs. Just an acceptance that at a club of Juventus’ stature, nobody can feel safe.

Vicario will do everything to remain Spalletti’s preferred option, but Grabara has an entire campaign to challenge that status. One error, one dip in form, and the narrative can flip quickly.

The gloves are Vicario’s for now. How long he keeps them will help define Juventus’ season.
