Jürgen Klopp Names Marc-André ter Stegen as Germany's No. 1 Goalkeeper

Jürgen Klopp has not eased his way into the Germany job. He has kicked the door down at the most sensitive position of all.

In his first major call as national team coach, Klopp has ended the long-running debate over who wears the No. 1 shirt. The answer is clear now: Marc-André ter Stegen.

According to German daily "Bild", Klopp has chosen the Barcelona goalkeeper – currently on loan at Ajax – as his first-choice keeper for Germany. No rotation. No shared role. Ter Stegen is the man.

Klopp did not leave the message to an email or a staff member. He picked up the phone himself. The 34-year-old heard directly from the new Bundestrainer that he has full trust and will be in Klopp’s first squad, which will be announced next Thursday.

For Ter Stegen, that call ends a long, bruising spell on the fringes of the national team. Injury robbed him of the last World Cup. More than a year passed without him pulling on the Germany shirt. For a goalkeeper of his calibre, that exile cut deep.

Now the comeback has a date and a stage. Ter Stegen is set to return in the UEFA Nations League against the Netherlands on 24 September in Amsterdam – the city he currently calls home as Ajax’s goalkeeper. Symbolism everywhere: a rebirth with Germany in the same place where he rebuilt his club career.

Baumann era closed

One keeper’s resurrection often means another’s goodbye. The biggest loser in Klopp’s reshuffle appears to be Oliver Baumann.

Several German outlets report that the Hoffenheim goalkeeper will be dropped entirely from the squad. After years spent as a loyal understudy behind Manuel Neuer with the four-time world champions, Baumann’s chapter with the national team seems to be closing. Quietly, but decisively.

Behind Ter Stegen, the battle now starts from scratch.

Bayern Munich’s young Jonas Urbig and Beşiktaş goalkeeper Alexander Nübel are believed to be leading the race for the remaining two goalkeeper spots. Both offer something different: youth, upside, and the chance to grow into long-term options under a coach who has never been afraid to back potential.

Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen is firmly in that mix as well, pushing hard to be on the list when Klopp reads out his first names.

Loris Karius, despite a strong spell with Schalke and his long-standing history with Klopp from their Liverpool days, is expected to feature only on the margins of the conversation. His form has improved, his story is compelling, but the hierarchy under Klopp looks set.
