Jurgen Klopp Faces Simple Challenge as Germany Manager, Backed to Bring ‘Heavy Metal Football’ to Euros and World Cup

Jurgen Klopp has been given a blunt challenge to be “less sh*t” as he steps into the role of Germany’s national team manager. Robert Huth, speaking to GOAL, expressed confidence that Klopp will introduce his trademark “heavy metal football” style to the international stage while targeting success in the European Championship and World Cup.

From Liverpool to the National Team

In 2024, Klopp ended a memorable nine-year spell at Liverpool, where he secured both Premier League and Champions League trophies. After cutting his contract short, he took on a position as Head of Global Football at Red Bull, enjoying more family time without the daily pressures of team management.

Despite this break, Klopp's passion for coaching remained strong. Rumors linked him to several top clubs, including Real Madrid. Ultimately, after Germany’s disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup under Julian Nagelsmann, Klopp accepted the call to lead Die Mannschaft, signing a contract through the 2030 World Cup.

Expectations for Klopp’s Germany

When asked about what success means for Klopp, former Germany international Robert Huth told GOAL:

“Be less sh*t! The bar isn’t very high right now. The appointment alone has already united people in Germany. It felt like the moment he was announced, everyone thought, ‘yes, this is the guy we wanted years ago.’”

Huth praised Klopp’s personality, mindset, and experience, which he believes can rebuild unity within the national team. He also admired Klopp’s straightforward approach from his first press conference, noting there was no empty talk but a clear message about effort and pride when wearing the German badge.

Huth added, “He didn’t bash previous managers but said Germany needs to do more compared to other nations who progressed further recently. So far, the Bundesliga clubs have responded well. Klopp has attended many games, and everything looks promising on paper.”

While Huth doesn’t expect an immediate trophy, he believes Germany will improve significantly. He recognized strong rivals such as France, England, Brazil, and Argentina but applauded the commitment Klopp demands from players.

“We’ve been sh*t since 2014, so reaching a semi-final would be decent. If Germany can replicate the intensity, pace, energy, and spirit Klopp had at Liverpool and Dortmund, I’m excited. It’s hard to bring that to a national team, but if anyone can, it’s him. That would be heavy metal football!”

Upcoming Fixtures and Tournaments

Klopp’s tenure begins with a UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands on Thursday at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena. His home debut follows on Sunday versus Greece at Augsburg’s WWK Arena.

Germany will start Euro 2028 qualification in March 2027. Their best recent performance in major tournaments was reaching the quarter-finals on home soil in 2024.
