Swansea City Acquire Ghanaian Winger Joseph Opoku from Zulte Waregem

Swansea City Secure Joseph Opoku from Belgian Club

Joseph Opoku, a 20-year-old winger from Ghana, has joined Swansea City after transferring from Belgian side Zulte Waregem. The Championship club confirmed the signing, with Opoku agreeing to a four-year contract that includes an option for an extra year.

Opoku arrived at Zulte Waregem in 2024 and played a key role in their promotion to the Belgian Pro League. His development there included regular senior football, which Swansea's head coach Vitor Matos believes will serve him well in England's second tier.

"He is a young player who has gained plenty of experience in senior football in Belgium," Matos said. "He's quick and sharp, and we think he can handle the physical demands and pace of the Championship."

Opoku has already joined the team during their pre-season tour in Austria and completed his first training session. His breakthrough season saw him score 10 goals and provide six assists, catching the attention of both club and country.

In May, Opoku made his senior debut for Ghana during a friendly against Mexico but narrowly missed out on the final World Cup squad despite being in the preliminary selection.

Swansea's sporting director Ben Stevens expressed enthusiasm about the new signing: "We're really pleased to have Joseph on board and are eager to see how his attacking skills develop under Vitor's guidance. His experience in Belgium's top flight and with Ghana's national teams shows his promising potential."

Opoku becomes the fifth addition to Swansea this summer, joining Elijah Just, Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo, and Leo Walta.
