Jose Mourinho's Key Message to Vinicius Jr About Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he used to help convince Vinicius Jr to turn his back on a potential Premier League move and instead tie his future to Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old forward was entering the final year of his deal at the Bernabeu, a dangerous window for any club with a global star. One more season and he could have walked away for nothing. Arsenal, fresh from a title-winning campaign in England, were watching closely as talks dragged on, sensing the rare chance to prise away one of the game’s elite wide players.

That door is now firmly shut. Earlier this month, Vinicius signed a new six-year contract, committing what should be the prime of his career to Real Madrid.

Mourinho, back in the Madrid dugout for a second spell after his return was confirmed in June, has now lifted the lid on his role in that decision.

‘Don’t leave. It’s not worth it’

Speaking on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, the 63-year-old did not dress it up.

“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said. Then he explained the conversation that mattered.

“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”

No sales pitch. No long speech. Just a warning from someone who has seen players walk away from the Bernabeu and only later grasp what they had.

For Mourinho, the decision was also rooted in what Vinicius has felt on the training ground since the coach’s return.

“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added.

A growing project, a trusted role, and the weight of the white shirt. For Vinicius, it was enough.

From touchline adversary to ally

The relationship between the two was not always framed from the same side of the line. Last season, Mourinho faced Real Madrid three times in the Champions League while in charge of Benfica.

Their second meeting – the first leg of a knockout phase play-off – turned ugly. Real players claimed Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni had racially abused Vinicius, prompting the match to be halted for around eight minutes.

Prestianni denied the allegations. Mourinho, then Benfica coach, publicly backed his player.

Uefa later stepped in, banning Prestianni for three matches, with a further three suspended, for homophobic conduct.

Mourinho has now revisited that flashpoint and drawn a clear line for Vinicius regarding where he stands.

“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he said.

That was the coach in battle mode, defending his own dressing room. The dynamic has changed.

“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side.”

From rival to protector, Mourinho now has one of the world’s most devastating wingers locked in for the long haul – and fully convinced that walking away from Real Madrid was never really an option.
