Jordan Henderson’s time at Brentford was brief. It clearly wasn’t shallow.

Inside that dressing room, his influence has lingered. Nathan Collins has seen it up close and doesn’t talk about Henderson’s passing range or medal collection first. He talks about the man.

“The main thing is him as a person,” Collins told Sky Sports, reflecting on the former team-mate who arrived late and left early but still managed to set the tone for a season. “It was a short stint, but I think he really enjoyed his time here.”

By the end of the campaign, Henderson had gone from high-profile signing to daily standard-setter. Collins paints a picture of a senior pro who didn’t hover above the group, but dropped right into the middle of it.

“He showed his true colours by the end of the season – who he is and what he’s about,” Collins said. “He got on with everyone, he had a really good attitude and looked forward to talking to people.”

The conversation quickly shifts to what really matters inside a training ground: standards. Sessions, intensity, the little details that separate a routine week from a sharp one.

“His standards on the pitch were a really big thing. He drove them, and he had a high set of standards. He really drove training a lot.”

That kind of presence is not easy to replace. And Collins doesn’t pretend otherwise.

“It’s tough that he’s gone,” he admitted. “But we have a few players who can step into that role and help out. What he’s left from last season, I think that will continue.”

Brentford haven’t just relied on legacy, though. They’ve gone out and spent big to reshape the heart of their midfield.

The club moved decisively to bring in Mamadou Sangare from Lens in a £41m deal – a new record outlay. At 23, he arrives with serious credentials: a Coupe de France winner and the player with the most possession recoveries in Ligue 1 last season. That’s not just a statistic; it’s a job description for a team that thrives on transitions and intensity.

Collins sounds genuinely enthused about the man who will now patrol the space in front of him.

“He brings a lot of energy. He brings a lot of tackles and forward-thinking passes,” the defender said. “He’s just a really good footballer and a smart footballer.”

Crucially for a new arrival, Sangare hasn’t needed a long bedding-in period.

“He speaks really good English so he’s settled in really nicely,” Collins added. “And to have him in front of you, it’ll be a big help for all players.”

Henderson’s voice may no longer echo around the training ground, but the habits he helped cement now meet fresh legs and a record signing built for the Premier League grind. Brentford’s midfield has changed faces – the expectations around it clearly haven’t.
