Joao Cancelo's Barcelona Return Closer as Al-Hilal Nears Contract Termination

Joao Cancelo’s Barcelona return has moved a major step closer, with reports in Saudi Arabia claiming Al-Hilal are close to terminating his contract and clearing the way for a free transfer to the Camp Nou.

All summer, the story looked simple on paper but complicated in practice. Barcelona wanted Cancelo back after his impressive second loan spell last season. Cancelo wanted Barcelona. The problem sat in the middle: Al-Hilal’s demand for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of 10-15 million euros, with the Portuguese defender tied to the Saudi Pro League club until 2027.

Now the picture is changing.

Saudi sports newspaper Arriyadiyah, via reporter Hamad Al-Suwaih, reports that Al-Hilal are nearing an agreement to terminate Cancelo’s contract. That move would rip up the financial barrier and allow Barcelona to bring him in without paying a fee, subject to the Catalan club managing their own registration and salary constraints.

“Al-Hilal nears the signing of contract termination agreement with Cancelo, paving the way for his signing with Spanish club Barcelona,” Al-Suwaih reported, a line that will be greeted with relief in Catalonia.

Cancelo has never hidden his stance. After thriving in a hybrid full-back role under Xavi last season and re-establishing himself as a key figure on the right flank, he made it clear he wanted to stay at Barcelona rather than return to Saudi Arabia. His performances and public insistence on a return turned what started as a negotiation into something closer to a waiting game.

Now, with the new La Liga season fast approaching, that wait may be almost over. If Al-Hilal complete the contract termination and Barcelona can fit him into their squad planning, Cancelo could be back in blaugrana in time to start the campaign exactly where he wants to be.
