The situation has been brewing for weeks. On August 13, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that United were growing worried about their chances of keeping Gabriel, with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona all circling around the highly rated teenager.

By mid-September, the tension snapped. On September 15, TEAMtalk reported that Gabriel had formally informed United he wanted out. Sources said the attacking prospect sent an official notice requesting that his academy registration be cancelled with immediate effect – a move that, if granted, would make him a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.

That birthday is crucial. Gabriel turns 16 on October 6, a date Bailey highlighted as a major turning point. From then, the youngster will be eligible to pursue a move to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona. His Irish passport only strengthens that possibility, easing the path to a move abroad.

The catch? His situation in England is anything but simple. Gabriel’s academy registration at United runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. While the player has asked for that registration to be cancelled, United are under no obligation to comply and retain the right to challenge his request.

ESPN reported this week that United have no intention of tearing up the agreement they already have with Gabriel. Fabrizio Romano also revealed that the club had been planning face-to-face talks to try to change his mind, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in the effort to keep him.

But the pressure has shifted.

On Wednesday afternoon, Manchester Evening News’ Chief Manchester United Correspondent, Tyrone Marshall, revealed that Gabriel was in Barcelona for talks over a move to the Nou Camp. Posting on X at 3:19pm on September 18, Marshall wrote: “JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp. United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc”.

Minutes later, at 3:45pm, Marshall followed up: “JJ Gabriel closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered. In Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today. Reports in Spain suggest he will get the EU passport he needs next week #mufc”.

That detail is key. Spanish reports suggesting his EU passport will be in place next week only increase the likelihood of a move to La Liga once he hits 16, even if the legal framework around his United registration still has to be navigated.

Real Madrid-leaning outlet Marca has also confirmed Gabriel’s presence in Barcelona, underlining how closely both Spanish giants are monitoring the situation. Reliable journalist Ben Jacobs added weight to the story, posting on X at 3:23pm: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”

So United are standing firm on paper, refusing to cancel his registration. Gabriel, though, is standing in Barcelona, talking to the reigning champions of Spain.

One side has the contract. The other has the teenager’s conviction.

With October 6 looming and FIFA potentially drawn into the dispute, the next move in this saga could reshape the early career of one of the most talked-about prospects in United’s academy – and hand either Barcelona or Real Madrid a major coup in the race for Europe’s next big thing.
