JJ Gabriel’s future at Manchester United has lurched into open conflict, with the teenage forward flying to Barcelona in a bid to push through a shock exit from the club.

The 15-year-old has formally asked United to cancel his registration with immediate effect and, according to the Daily Mail, left the UK on Thursday, routing through France before landing in Catalonia for talks.

He has not trained with United since exploding onto the scene with a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut. That performance was followed, jarringly, by his omission from the squad for the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah, a decision that raised eyebrows and now looks like an early flashpoint in an escalating dispute.

Barcelona circle as Europe’s elite take notice

Barcelona’s interest is not new. The Catalan club have tracked Gabriel for a long spell and hosted him in August 2024, giving him a tour of their facilities and arranging a meeting with Lamine Yamal – a clear signal of how highly they rate him.

They are not alone. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all watching the situation closely, aware that Gabriel’s unique eligibility could open a rare door into the English academy system.

Ordinarily, UK-based players cannot move abroad until they turn 18. Gabriel, though, holds an Irish passport. That dual nationality changes everything. It means he can join a club in the EU from his 16th birthday on 6 October, provided a deal is struck to end his current arrangement with United.

For now, United have refused his request to tear up his contract.

Carrick calls for calm amid mounting scrutiny

Manager Michael Carrick was forced to address the saga at his press conference on Friday, with questions about Gabriel now dominating the youth-team narrative at Carrington.

"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," Carrick said. "With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything. The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."

Carrick’s message was clear: the club want to dial down the noise and shield a teenager who has suddenly found himself at the centre of a high-stakes tug of war.

Registration row and a looming deadline

The stand-off has immediate consequences. Gabriel will miss the Premier League 2 fixture against Brentford on Friday, another step away from the pitch as lawyers and executives take centre stage.

If United keep hold of his registration, he will be blocked from joining another English side this season. That would effectively freeze his domestic options and push the battle for his signature firmly onto the continental stage.

Time, though, is ticking. With his 16th birthday fast approaching, the attraction of Barcelona – or another European heavyweight – grows by the day. If an agreement can be reached to sever his ties with United, the next chapter of JJ Gabriel’s career is likely to be written far from Manchester.
