Italy’s 2006 World Cup Champions Look Back Two Decades Later
Remembering Italy’s 2006 World Cup Triumph After 20 Years
It has been two decades since Italy claimed their fourth FIFA World Cup title. On this milestone anniversary, many of the heroes from that iconic team shared their memories of the unforgettable victory in Berlin.
The final against France was a tense and dramatic encounter, ending with a penalty shootout after an intense back-and-forth battle. The match took a turn when French captain Zinedine Zidane was sent off in the 110th minute following a headbutt on Marco Materazzi, leaving France with ten men during the closing moments of extra time.
Fabio Grosso emerged as a hero once again by converting the winning penalty that secured Italy’s victory. Over the course of the tournament, Italy conceded just two goals—one from an own goal and another from a penalty kick—never allowing an opponent to score from open play. Gianluigi Buffon, Italy’s goalkeeper, kept a clean sheet in every match during regular play.
Reflections From the 2006 Squad
The players forged lasting bonds through their shared success, becoming legends within Italian football. Defender Gianluca Zambrotta described the triumph as an everlasting source of joy and a defining moment in his life and career.
“It was a tremendous joy, obviously, and it’s something that I remember every day,” Zambrotta said. “It’s something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
Marco Materazzi, who scored the crucial equalizer in the first half, reflected nostalgically on returning to Berlin years later.
“20 years later, I returned to Berlin. The stairs, the corner of my goal, the penalty spot, it’s all still there. The greatest day of my life. July 9, 2006. It feels like yesterday.”
Fabio Cannavaro, the team captain, posted a simple yet powerful tribute on Instagram: “Twenty years ago today. Always ❤️.”
Andrea Pirlo also shared a heartfelt message, writing, “So we don’t forget. 20 years ago ❤️,” while Alessandro Del Piero urged the team to “Finish what you started. Campioni del Mondo.”
Buffon’s Emotional Tribute
Gianluigi Buffon expressed deep gratitude and pride in representing Italy. His words captured the spirit of that night and the ongoing connection between the team and their supporters.
“There are days that don’t belong only to those who lived them. They belong to an entire nation. July 9, 2006, is one of those days. 20 years later, that memory is just as powerful: the embrace of an extraordinary team, the joy of millions of Italians, the pride of wearing that shirt and writing a page of history together,” Buffon wrote.
He acknowledged recent struggles but reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Azzurri.
“Our love for the Azzurri never changes, and it never fades. It’s a bond that endures through time, through victories, disappointments, and fresh starts. Thank you to my teammates, the staff, and all the Italians who dreamed with us. That night will forever remain one of the greatest chapters in our history. And it will continue to remind us what it means to represent Italy.”
