Hull City Break Transfer Record for Nobel Mendy

Hull City have torn up their own transfer history to bring in Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further year, in a move that eclipses the fee Hull paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos.

The club have not disclosed the figure, but confirmed it tops the £20m plus add-ons spent on Tzolakis, making Mendy the most expensive signing in Hull’s history. That also pushes into the distance the previous record, the £13m paid for Ryan Mason from Tottenham back in 2016.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” Mendy said after completing the move.

“I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Mendy arrives with a growing reputation after a standout year in Spain. Having started his career at Paris FC, he moved through Real Betis before joining Rayo Vallecano, where he scored twice in 28 La Liga appearances in his only season with the club.

His final game for Rayo came on one of the biggest stages of his career so far – the Conference League final, where the Spanish side lost to Crystal Palace. It was a painful repeat for the defender, who had also reached the Conference League final the previous year with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea.

On the international stage, Mendy is just beginning to break through. He earned his first cap for Senegal in March, featuring against The Gambia.

Hull have now invested heavily in the spine of their team, backing youth and potential with two record-breaking deals in the same window. The next question is simple: how quickly can Mendy turn that faith and that fee into Premier League authority?
