Harry Kane, the Bayern Munich striker and England captain, shared his thoughts on life after football ahead of England's UEFA Nations League match against Spain. He revealed that a future switch to Major League Soccer (MLS) could lead to a dual career as an NFL placekicker within five to six years.

Kane Looks Beyond Current Success

At 33, fresh from a remarkable season scoring 73 goals for Bayern Munich, Kane is among the top contenders for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. Reports suggest he is close to renewing his contract with Bayern, but the England captain is already thinking about what comes next. Speaking at St George’s Park, Kane suggested that playing in MLS might open doors to American football, combining the two sports in his post-football journey.

Pathway From Soccer to NFL Placekicking Exists

Kane bases his idea on the similarity between penalty kicks and NFL placekicking. He referenced Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys, who was initially drafted by Toronto FC in MLS before becoming one of the NFL's most accurate kickers. Kane also mentioned former Tottenham striker Clive Allen, who played for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe, as an early example of a soccer player crossing into American football.

His own precision in penalty-taking throughout his career with Tottenham, Bayern, and England strengthens his case. Kane has long admired NFL legend Tom Brady, giving his NFL ambitions more weight than a casual comment.

Kane on NFL Versus Golf Crossover

"Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two, maybe with the seasons," Kane told reporters via The Athletic. "That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously. It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way."

He added on technique: "I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure, technique. If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than any other sport. If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take maybe six months to a year of trying to practice before."

Football Comes First, NFL Dream on Hold

Kane emphasized that this NFL plan remains a distant prospect while he thrives in European football. "If people know I am still on the top of my game here with football, it is not a conversation that would be had," he said, adding he aims to get the most from his remaining peak years. This idea is not new; back in 2019, Kane mentioned a 10 to 12-year timeline for transitioning to the NFL. Now, with Bayern contract talks progressing and MLS seen as a potential late-career move, the pieces of this unique two-sport path seem to be aligning.
