Hamburg Sign Bilal Nadir from Marseille for Midfield Reinforcement
Hamburg have dipped into Ligue 1 to add steel and subtlety to their midfield, sealing the free transfer of Moroccan international Bilal Nadir from Olympique Marseille.
The 20-year-old arrives as the club’s second signing of the summer, following forward Patson Daka, and immediately heads into the heart of their pre-season work. Hamburg announced the deal on their official X account, confirming that Nadir has signed a long-term contract and will wear the number 4 shirt.
From Nice to the North
Born in Nice on 28 November 2003, Nadir came through his hometown club’s academy before Marseille moved for him in the summer of 2021. It was on the south coast that his reputation began to grow.
After breaking into the first team in 2023, the left-footed midfielder made 53 competitive appearances for Marseille, scoring twice and providing five assists. His rise wasn’t confined to domestic football either: he featured four times in the Champions League and twice in the Europa League, gaining a taste of the elite level that Hamburg hope to return to.
Standing at 1.86 metres, Nadir offers presence as well as poise. That blend has clearly appealed to Hamburg’s hierarchy.
“Versatile” and “calm” – Hamburg’s vision for Nadir
Nadir completed his medical before joining the squad at their training camp in Austria, where he signed his contract in front of club officials. Once the paperwork was done, his message was simple and direct.
“I am very happy to become a Hamburg player, and I can't wait to meet the club's fans and play for this city,” he said.
Inside the club, expectations are clear. Kathleen Kruger, a member of Hamburg’s sporting board, outlined exactly why the Moroccan fits their plans.
“Bilal is a versatile player who can fill several roles in midfield. His arrival gives us greater flexibility, and he also has a calm personality and fits in with our style of play and our values,” she explained.
Sporting director Claus Costa underlined that assessment, highlighting the technical and artistic quality of the left-footer, whose height and profile suggest he can influence games in multiple zones across the pitch.
Morocco’s next in line
Nadir’s move comes at a time when his international career is beginning to stir. Morocco called him into the senior squad in March 2025, a clear sign of how highly he is rated within a national setup packed with midfield talent. He is still waiting for his first full cap, but he has already represented Morocco at under-23 level and previously turned out for several French youth national teams.
Hamburg are betting that regular football in Germany will accelerate that next step.
For a club trying to sharpen its identity and climb again, a tall, composed, left-footed midfielder with European experience and international ambition is a deliberate choice. Now the question is simple: how quickly can Bilal Nadir turn promise into authority in the famous blue shirt?
