Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are finally confirmed to meet in the ring on 11 December at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. The eagerly awaited all-British heavyweight fight has been in the making for over a decade and will be broadcast worldwide via Netflix.

Organizers are considering a late-night start in the UK, possibly in the early hours of Saturday morning, to accommodate US viewers. The fighters will officially meet at a London press conference on 30 September as the build-up to the bout intensifies.

"I am inspiring a generation," said Joshua on Instagram. Fury has yet to comment on the fight announcement.

The event is promoted through a partnership between Saudi boxing figure Turki Alalshikh's The Ring and UFC president Dana White.

Alalshikh stated, "Two of the best heavyweights of this era, finally in the ring. This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. I'm pleased to make this happen for the fans."

Contracts were signed earlier this year, but the venue and date had not been finalized until now. While Wembley Stadium in London and Madison Square Garden in New York were front-runners, Cardiff emerged as the top choice after logistical challenges elsewhere.

The Principality Stadium has experience with late-night boxing events, such as Joe Calzaghe’s fight with Mikkel Kessler in November 2007, which started at 01:00 GMT.

Both Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Council officials welcomed the announcement, seeing it as a chance to boost the city’s reputation for hosting major events and to stimulate the local economy, though some operational details remain to be settled.

Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn commented, "Forever indebted to the UK public for their support of Anthony Joshua. We couldn’t have got this over the line without you."

Dana White’s involvement signals the high stakes and broad appeal of the fight.

White remarked, "For more than a decade, fans have been eager for the heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Together they bring 66 wins, 52 knockouts, and multiple world titles into the ring. On December 11, two of the biggest heavyweights of this generation finally collide - the winner will earn a significant place in heavyweight history."

Neither Eddie Hearn nor Fury’s promoter Frank Warren issued official statements with the Netflix release. Hearn previously expressed reservations about White’s role in promotion.

Timing the Fight for US Audiences

The possibility of a very late start in Cardiff is unusual but has precedent. Ricky Hatton’s 2005 win over Kostya Tszyu in Manchester began around 02:00 local time to fit US TV slots. Similarly, Joe Calzaghe’s fights have been held at odd hours to suit American broadcasts.

MMA events have gone even later. Michael Bisping’s UFC title defense in Manchester in 2016 started at about 04:45 local time. UFC 304 in Manchester in 2024 also began at 03:00 BST to align with US East Coast prime time.

Eddie Hearn downplayed talk of a 03:00 GMT start for Fury-Joshua. A ringwalk near 01:00 or 02:00 GMT would coincide with 20:00 or 21:00 on the US East Coast.

British boxing fans have debated and hoped for this fight for years. Negotiations collapsed multiple times, and the path to the ring was littered with obstacles.

In 2020, a two-fight deal was agreed. In 2021, contracts for an undisputed heavyweight contest were signed but delayed due to Fury’s legal battle with Deontay Wilder. Joshua accepted a 60-40 split offer in 2022, but that plan fell through too.

Now the fight is set in the UK, fulfilling Joshua’s wish. It offers a stadium fit for a major event in December and a schedule accommodating American audiences.
