Franco Mastantuono Breaks Messi's Record in Serie A

Franco Mastantuono didn’t just light up Venice. He rewrote a page of Argentine football history.

The 19-year-old Fiorentina winger, on loan from Real Madrid, struck a hat-trick at Venezia that wiped out a record held by Lionel Messi for almost two decades. Mastantuono is now the youngest Argentine ever to score a hat-trick in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

On Friday night he was 19 years and 28 days old – 231 days younger than Messi was when he produced his first league hat-trick on 10 March 2007. For the record, Messi’s treble came in the Clasico against Real Madrid. Mastantuono’s arrived in a different setting, but the numbers still crackle off the page.

A 98-second turnaround

Fiorentina trailed 1-0 at the break and looked fragile. Then Mastantuono tore the game open.

He needed just 98 seconds after the restart to flip the scoreline on its head, smashing in a rapid brace that stunned Venezia and dragged Fiorentina in front. From anxiety to control in under two minutes, all driven by a teenager desperate to prove he belongs at the very top.

Venezia wobbled. Fiorentina grew. The match tilted purple.

In the 84th minute, Mastantuono finished the job. His third goal stretched the lead to 4-1, effectively killing the contest before a late reply from the hosts trimmed it to 4-2. By then, the damage was done and the story already written: Fiorentina’s first win of the new Serie A season, their first points on the board, carried by a 19-year-old with ice in his veins.

Vanoli back, Fiorentina breathe

Plenty of the spotlight naturally falls on Mastantuono. But this night also belonged to Paolo Vanoli.

Vanoli had kept Fiorentina in the division last season, only to be replaced in the summer by 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Grosso. The gamble backfired quickly. Grosso opened the campaign with three straight defeats and a grim goal difference of 1:9. The club acted. Grosso was dismissed, Vanoli was recalled, and within a week he was back in the dugout in Florence.

His return brought structure. Mastantuono brought the spark.

The combination delivered exactly what the Tuscan club needed: a statement away win and a sense that the season doesn’t have to be a slog.

Real Madrid’s €45m question

Behind all of this sits another giant: Real Madrid.

Mastantuono moved to Madrid from River Plate in 2025 for a fee of €45 million. Until now, his time at the Bernabéu had been more promise than product. Thirty-five appearances in all competitions, but only 42 minutes per game on average. Three goals. One assist. Flickers, not fireworks.

So Real Madrid sent him out on loan to Italy, to grow, to suffer a little, to play.

Now, in Florence, he has smashed in three goals in a single Serie A match and snatched a record from Messi’s hands. He remains on loan at Fiorentina until next summer.

The fee is no longer the only talking point. The real question is how long Madrid can keep a talent like this waiting.
