Ethan Dowman's Future at Arsenal: Mikel Arteta's Plan

Mikel Arteta has no intention of rushing Ethan Dowman out of the door – no matter how quickly the 16-year-old is forcing his way into the spotlight.

Dowman underlined his growing reputation with a brace against Ipswich in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, another sharp reminder that Arsenal have a serious talent on their hands. Each first-team chance so far has been met with end product. Each appearance makes the conversation louder.

From the end of December, when he turns 17, Dowman will be eligible to go out on loan. Clubs have already contacted Arsenal to ask the question. For now, the answer is simple: not yet.

Arteta was clear about the club’s stance and the plan they drew up long before Dowman’s Carabao Cup heroics.

“We haven't really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have him in the squad,” Arteta said. “That we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there. We will evaluate every six months, where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision.”

So Arsenal keep him close. They watch, they measure, they wait. The door to a loan is not locked, but it is firmly on the latch.

Arteta knows exactly what a bold move at 17 can look like. He made one himself.

“In my particular case I was 17 when I went to Paris,” he said, recalling his own move to Paris Saint-Germain at the same age. “There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not. It depends on the atmosphere that you find there and how much the coach believes in you, whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes. Which country, it depends.”

That experience shapes his thinking now. Age, on its own, will not decide Dowman’s path. Context will.

After three years training around the first team, Arsenal chose to send Ethan Nwaneri on loan to Marseille for the second half of last season, a different route for another highly rated teenager. The club see no one-size-fits-all blueprint.

“It depends on a lot of factors – what he needs and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes,” Arteta explained.

For Dowman, the calculation is ongoing. The goals against Ipswich have sharpened the focus, but not changed the plan. Arsenal want to control his environment, his minutes, his next step.

The interest is real. The temptation will grow once he turns 17. The question now is not whether he’s good enough to attract suitors. It’s when – and where – Arsenal decide he is ready to leave the nest, even temporarily.
