Sources close to the situation have confirmed the Chelsea midfielder is very keen on making the switch to the Etihad this summer, and the message to City is clear: if they want him, they cannot hang around.

People involved in the talks believe a deal could be struck at around £100million – a huge fee, but still £20m short of Chelsea’s current asking price. For City, that’s the number in play. For Chelsea, it’s already a compromise.

The Argentina international, signed by the Blues for £107m from Benfica in 2023 and now a central figure at Stamford Bridge, is understood to see joining Enzo Maresca’s side as the ideal next step in his career. The style, the project, the trophies on offer – it all appeals.

Rodri factor looms large

Chelsea wary of drawn-out saga under Alonso

Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Chelsea’s hierarchy are determined to protect their pre-season and avoid a transfer drama stretching into the final weeks of the window. They do not want a key midfielder’s future hanging over training sessions and tactical plans.
