England’s Thrilling World Cup Win Breaks BBC Viewing Records

England’s Narrow Victory Draws Record Viewers for BBC

The BBC reported its highest live audience of 2026 after England edged out DR Congo in a tense World Cup round of 32 match, with 16.3 million people tuning in across the UK.

Fans endured a nerve-wracking contest as DR Congo took an early lead and held strong for over an hour. Yet captain Harry Kane delivered two late goals, pushing England into the round of 16.

The match averaged 14 million viewers, making it the year’s most-watched moment on the BBC. Digital platforms saw impressive numbers too, with 10.4 million streams across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and the app. The live coverage page alone attracted more than 20 million global views, 14 million from the UK.

Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC Director of Sport, remarked: "These figures prove that the BBC is where the nation gathers for major sporting events. England’s dramatic win united millions on TV, iPlayer, digital platforms, and social media. We are proud to offer premium UHD broadcasts, immersive experiences, and expert analysis as fans follow England’s journey."

Looking Ahead to the Round of 16

England’s next challenge comes against Mexico on Monday, 6 July, at 1am, broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Mexico has been formidable at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, winning all four of their matches in this World Cup so far and boasting a strong home record with only two losses in 89 games.

The stadium sits at 2,240 meters above sea level, a factor Thomas Tuchel acknowledges as an advantage for Mexico. Still, with Harry Kane leading the attack, England remains a tough team to count out.

All World Cup 2026 matches will be shown live on either BBC or ITV until the tournament concludes with the final on Sunday, 19 July.
