Deco's Urgent Search for Barcelona's New Centre-Back

Barcelona’s defence has a new problem to solve, and Deco is in a hurry.

Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool has ripped a hole straight through the spine of Hansi Flick’s back line, and inside the club there is a clear verdict: the current centre-back group is not enough to carry Barcelona through the entire 2026/27 season.

Deco’s urgent search

According to AS, sporting director Deco is now working flat out on one specific task: find a left-footed centre-back who brings experience and reliability, and do it before the window shuts.

This isn’t about stockpiling talent. It’s about survival over a long, demanding campaign.

With Araujo gone, Barcelona are left with Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen as their primary options in central defence. On paper, it’s a decent mix. In reality, it leaves Flick with limited room to rotate and little margin for injury, loss of form or suspension.

The pressure is obvious. One setback, and the entire structure starts to look fragile.

Cortes at a crossroads

In theory, Alvaro Cortes could be the extra piece. He remains in Flick’s orbit as a potential squad option, but inside the club there are serious doubts about whether he is ready to shoulder the weight of a full season as a regular first-team defender rather than an occasional presence.

That hesitation cuts both ways. Cortes no longer wants to drop back to Barça Atlètic and, crucially, he already has offers on the table from elsewhere. A departure in the coming days is very much on the cards.

If he goes, the hole gets even bigger. Deco’s search becomes not just important, but non-negotiable.

The message from the sporting department is clear: they are not looking for another project. They want someone who can walk through the door and immediately raise the level, someone who fights for minutes from day one rather than waits for them.

A very specific profile

That is why the profile is so tight. Barcelona want a left-footed centre-back, experienced enough to guide a back line, yet affordable within the club’s financial constraints.

Names have already slipped through their fingers. Luka Vuskovic, admired at the Camp Nou, ended up at Brighton. At 19, he was ultimately judged too young for what Deco needs right now: certainty, not potential.

The same reasoning applies to Jon Martin of Real Sociedad. Barcelona like him, rate him, and see the talent. His age, though, makes him a better long-term bet than an immediate solution.

Even Cristian Romero, despite his proven quality and experience, did not fit the exact profile the club had drawn up. This isn’t a scattergun search for the best available defender on the market. It’s a hunt for a very specific piece in a very tight puzzle.

Barcelona know exactly what they want. The question is whether the market will give it to them before the clock runs out.
