Cristhian Mosquera’s hamstring scare has put Arsenal’s defensive plans under the microscope, but Mikel Arteta insists the situation is under control.

The defender limped out of last week’s clash with Aston Villa, grabbing at the middle of his hamstring as he sank to the turf. At the time, Arteta tried to cool the mood around the incident.

“He is fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something,” the Arsenal manager said after that game, hinting at more of a precaution than a crisis.

Yet when the team sheet dropped for Sunday’s meeting with Chelsea and Mosquera’s name was missing, concern spiked. Ezri Konsa was thrown in for his full debut in red and white, and the conversation quickly shifted from “tightness” to “how bad is it?”

Arteta addressed those fears after the Chelsea match. The diagnosis: a muscle issue, but not one currently ringing alarm bells.

“He had a muscular issue, and we think it’s not too much,” Arteta confirmed. “But we need to wait and see the next few days for how it evolves.”

That wait is crucial. With Napoli looming on Wednesday, Mosquera is facing a race against time. The need for a few more days of assessment makes his involvement in Europe highly doubtful, turning Saturday’s game against Sunderland into a more realistic comeback target.

In the meantime, Konsa has kicked the door open.

Thrown straight into the starting XI against Chelsea, the summer arrival delivered a composed, assertive performance. One challenge on former teammate Morgan Rogers in particular jolted the crowd to its feet and underlined exactly why Arsenal moved for him.

There is a caveat. Konsa has only just returned from his holidays and is still building full match sharpness. Arteta will be wary of pushing him too hard, too soon, especially with the schedule tightening.

Even so, if the defender is physically ready to go again on Wednesday, there will be little hesitation about his footballing readiness. On this evidence, Arsenal can trust his quality. The real question now is whether Mosquera’s hamstring allows Arteta the luxury of choice, or forces his hand in the defining weeks ahead.
