Philippe Coutinho Reunites with Neymar at Santos FC

Philippe Coutinho has reunited with close friend and Brazil team-mate Neymar at Santos FC, signing with the club until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old playmaker had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. He had returned to his boyhood side in 2024 and made 81 appearances before walking away, admitting he was "tired mentally".

Now he steps into another chapter of a career that has taken him from Rio to some of Europe’s biggest stages.

Santos announced his arrival with a heavy dose of nostalgia. The club shared an old photograph of Coutinho and Neymar as teenagers, then paired it with a new shot of the duo recreating the same pose in the gym, older, wiser, but back where it all began for Neymar.

They pushed the emotion further with a video from inside the dressing room. Coutinho walks in, Neymar greets him with a hug, and the Brazilian midfielder says: "If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up." For the first time, the long-time friends will share not just a national team shirt, but a club one as well.

Neymar rejoined Santos, his own childhood club, in January last year. His return lit the spark; Coutinho’s arrival adds another layer of star power and sentiment to a squad trying to rebuild its identity.

Coutinho’s journey has rarely been straightforward. He came through at Vasco before earning a move to Inter Milan, then truly exploding onto the European scene at Liverpool, where he scored 54 goals in 201 games and became one of the Premier League’s most feared attacking midfielders. That form earned him a £142m move to Barcelona in 2018, one of the biggest transfers in football history.

The Barcelona chapter never quite matched the hype. He moved through Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Al-Duhail, then circled back to Vasco, searching for rhythm and peace of mind.

Now comes Santos, Neymar, and one more shot at writing a memorable final act.
