A Long-Awaited Reunion at Vila Belmiro

Santos secured the signature of the 34-year-old midfielder after his departure from Vasco da Gama earlier this year. Coutinho had announced his exit from Vasco via social media in February, explaining he was mentally drained and needed a break from football. Now, he is set to bring his experience to Santos, aiming to help lift the club’s standing in the league.

Coutinho's Career Journey: From Anfield to South America

Coutinho's career has spanned Europe’s top leagues, highlighted by his impressive stint at Liverpool. Joining the Reds from Inter Milan in 2013, he became a key figure under managers Brendan Rodgers and Jürgen Klopp, tallying 54 goals and 44 assists in 201 appearances. His performances earned him a high-profile £142 million transfer to Barcelona in January 2018, arriving just a year after Neymar left for Paris Saint-Germain.

While at Barcelona, Coutinho won consecutive La Liga titles and enjoyed a successful loan at Bayern Munich, where he lifted the Champions League trophy in 2020. Notably, during that season, he scored twice as Bayern crushed Barcelona 8-2 in the quarter-finals.

Return to England and Move Back to Brazil

Seeking to revive his form, Coutinho returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa initially on loan in January 2022, before signing permanently in the summer. Although his contract ran until 2026, Villa agreed to an early release, allowing him to return to Brazil with Vasco da Gama a year ahead of schedule.
