Colorado Rapids Complete Record Transfer of Lucas Herrington to Hull City

Colorado Rapids have completed a landmark sale, sending teenage defender Lucas Herrington to Premier League returnees Hull City in a club-record transfer that also rewrites the MLS history books.

The 18-year-old Australian moves to England in a deal reportedly worth up to $23 million — $17 million guaranteed — with a sell-on clause attached. No MLS club has ever received a higher outbound fee for a defender.

Rapids cash in on rapid rise

Herrington’s time in Colorado has been brief, but explosive.

Signed in August 2025 on a pre-contract from A-League side Brisbane Roar FC for a reported fee of under $1 million, he arrived in Denver in January chasing a dream and left less than a year later as one of the league’s most valuable exports.

On the field, he justified the hype at breakneck speed. The center back earned 2026 MLS All-Star honors, broke into the Socceroos setup and appeared in two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Back with the Rapids this season, he posted 1 goal and 1 assist in 20 games, anchoring the back line while showcasing the composure and range that caught European eyes.

Off the field, the club saw the transfer as validation of its blueprint.

From Brisbane to Colorado to the Premier League

For Herrington, this move caps an extraordinary 18-month climb.

“When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream. The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one,” he said.

“I’m grateful to my family, my teammates and coach Matt Wells, and Padraig Smith for believing in me, supporting my growth and giving me the opportunity to take the next steps in my career. To the fans: thank you for embracing a kid from Brisbane as one of your own. Colorado has given me so much, and I’ll always be proud to have been a Rapid. Now he walks into a very different challenge.

Hull City, back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign, earned promotion by beating Middlesbrough in the 2025-26 EFL Championship playoff final. They are rebuilding for top-flight survival and have turned to one of MLS’s brightest young defenders to help them cope with the jump in quality.

Big fee, big gap to fill

For Colorado, the money is huge. The hole in the lineup is just as big.

This is the first season under head coach Matt Wells, the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant tasked with reshaping the Rapids. His side sits 11th in the Western Conference, on 22 points, two shy of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line. Herrington had become central to that push.

Now Wells and the front office must prove that their talent pipeline runs deeper than one breakout star. The club have shown they can spot and develop a future Premier League defender. The next test is whether they can turn that record fee into a squad capable of climbing back into the playoff places — and staying there.
