Cole Palmer's Ibiza Escape After World Cup Snub
Cole Palmer should have been packing for America. Instead, the Chelsea playmaker was under the lights of Ibiza’s Ocean Beach on Wednesday, trying to park the hurt of a World Cup snub with music, drink and a crowd that barely let him breathe.
Palmer, 24, left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this month’s tournament, cut a very different figure from the one that has lit up the Premier League. No boots, no training kit, just a bucket hat, a drink in hand and a ring of people who all knew exactly who he was.
The England hopeful, who has been with influencer girlfriend Olivia Holder for almost a year, was on a lads’ trip when his group linked up with Love Island star Megan Moore and her friends at the celebrity hotspot. The scene was pure summer excess: booming sound system, VIP beds, and a constant flow of bottles.
Onlookers watched Palmer quickly become the centre of gravity. “Cole was the life and soul of the party,” said one eyewitness. Women drifted towards his group, phones out, drinks raised, drawn to one of the most talked‑about omissions of the summer.
Palmer and Megan Moore were seen laughing and joking together, a familiar pairing rather than a chance holiday flirtation. Her cousin runs some of his social media, and the two have known each other for a while, which helped break the tension of a week that hit him harder than most.
He looked like a man determined to switch off. “He looked as though he was in need of a good night out after the football news,” the eyewitness added. “He was obviously enjoying the freedom of having some time off. The amount of booze they were putting back, the hangovers they’ll have today will be rotten.”
Palmer and his friends arrived late in the afternoon, easing into the evening as the sun dropped over the Balearic skyline. By around 11pm, the group – Megan included – slipped out together, leaving behind the thud of the music and the camera phones that had followed them all night.
The Break
The break was no coincidence. After Tuchel’s squad announcement, insiders said Palmer had flown out on a “top secret” trip with Olivia Holder to clear his head. The decision to omit him, in a list that also left out big names such as Harry Maguire and Phil Foden, landed with the force of a body blow.
“Not making the squad hit Cole hard, like all the other players including Harry Maguire and Phil Foden,” a source said. “It was a tough pill to swallow. Naturally these lads live for football and to represent their team at the World Cup is what they all want to do. Cole almost immediately took himself away for a break with Olivia to get into the right frame of mind. He’ll enjoy a break before he gets back to training.”
His absence has become one of the defining flashpoints of England’s build‑up. This is a player capable of ripping open a game with one moment of brilliance, a player many assumed was nailed on for the plane. Even Wayne Rooney, Palmer’s boyhood idol, admitted he was surprised to see the Chelsea man missing from the list. Supporters echoed that disbelief, questioning how a talent of his profile could be left at home.
Turning the Page
Palmer is not alone in trying to turn the page. Phil Foden has also stepped away from the storm, spending the early part of the summer with long‑term partner Rebecca Cooke and their children. Maguire, meanwhile, is already plotting his own World Cup role from the outside looking in.
The Manchester United defender is lining up a move into the studio, with The Athletic reporting he is expected to feature on “The Rest is Football” when the tournament kicks off. The hugely popular podcast fronted by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will be turned into a daily television show for the duration of the World Cup, streamed on Netflix and bolstered by a cast of special guests that includes Maguire.
For Palmer, there will be no pundit’s chair, no World Cup training camp, no scramble for minutes off the bench. Just a brief escape in Ibiza, a few nights to forget, and then the hard work of proving that the next major tournament cannot start without him.
