Chelsea Set to Sign Lacroix for £52 Million

Chelsea are closing in on one of the most expensive defensive signings of the summer, with Crystal Palace centre-back Lacroix on the verge of a £52 million move to Stamford Bridge, according to The Athletic.

The Frenchman is due to undergo a medical on Friday and is expected to sign a long-term deal running until 2032, a commitment that underlines just how central Chelsea believe he can be to their next era.

From Wolfsburg to West London

Lacroix has not arrived at this point by accident. Since joining Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024, he has climbed the Premier League ladder at speed, turning raw promise into authority.

At 190cm, he offers the physical profile modern coaches covet, but it’s the volume and level of his performances that have driven his value through the roof. Across all competitions last season he played 55 times, anchoring a Palace side that not only lifted the Community Shield but also went all the way in the Conference League.

Those displays pushed him into France’s 2026 World Cup squad. They also pushed his price. What began as an €18m investment for Palace has become a premium sale, a textbook case of development meeting opportunity in the English top flight.

Chelsea have been tracking him closely since June. He sat on a shortlist that also included Como defender Jacobo Ramon, yet as the weeks passed, Lacroix moved from option to obsession. The club chose to concentrate their efforts on the Palace man, convinced that his trajectory and temperament fit the rebuild under Xabi Alonso.

Alonso’s back line, shaken up

His arrival will not be a quiet one. A fee of around £52m and a contract to 2032 do not signal squad depth; they signal a pillar.

Chelsea’s defensive hierarchy is about to feel the tremor. Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Mamadou Sarr all sit in positions that could be reshaped once Lacroix walks through the door. Some will see minutes squeezed, others could be moved on.

Alonso, still at the start of his Chelsea tenure, has little time to waste. Once the deal is signed off, he must plug Lacroix into his defensive structure across the remaining pre-season games, testing partnerships, distances, and build-up patterns before the real football starts. A defender arriving off the back of 55 matches should, in theory, adapt quickly, but the Premier League rarely grants grace periods.

The club’s hierarchy, meanwhile, face a parallel task: trimming and tuning a crowded centre-back department. Balancing game time, contracts and dressing-room dynamics will be crucial if Chelsea are to enter the new campaign with clarity rather than congestion at the heart of their defence.

Palace forced back into the market

For Crystal Palace, this is both a windfall and a headache.

Cash from a major sale can reshape a squad, but losing a cornerstone so close to the season forces their hand in the market. The club have already started work on a replacement, with Augsburg’s Chrislain Matsima identified as a leading target and Trabzonspor’s Chibuike Nwaiwu viewed as an alternative.

The clock is not their friend. Palace must secure a defender capable of stepping into Lacroix’s role before the window closes if they are to protect the defensive stability that underpinned last season’s success.

Chelsea, by contrast, are betting that tearing that cornerstone out of south London and planting it in west London will accelerate their own revival. If Lacroix settles as quickly as he rose at Palace, this could be the signing that quietly defines their back line for the rest of the decade.
